Any percussionist who wishes to play with musicality requires the right mallet for the job. A significant challenge we face is the cost of marimba mallets, which can range from forty to one hundred dollars per pair. This financial burden impacts all percussionists, including high school programs that often operate with limited budgets.
Our solution is to create mallets using inexpensive materials, allowing a single pair to be made for under five dollars. This approach provides an affordable alternative for both students and educators. Our objective is to produce durable, high-quality mallets that anyone can easily make and use. As educators, mastering this skill both enhances our value to schools and empowers our students to gain a deeper understanding of percussion instruments and their musical properties.
We believe that there is always a right mallet for the job, and if you can't buy it you should be able to make it yourself. Just as oboists make their own reeds, percussionists should be able to make their own mallets, to their own tastes and needs.
We wanted to make a resources available to everybody with information about not just how to make a mallet, but with a full guide on how to get started making different types of varying hardness and quality. We don't want to just tell you how to wrap the mallet but how to personally hand craft a mallet that sounds exactly how you want it to, using inexpensive resources readily available to you.
